The year started with us busy in the workshop with clients repairs and a couple of rebuilds. This meant the Steinway project once again took a back seat. When finally work was re started the pedal assembly was next for refurbishment. This is where decisions had to be made. The original pedals were nickel plated.Piano furniture (hinges/pedals/locks) were either brass or nickel plated our piano seems to have been a mixture of both. The pedals are nickel plated, the lid hinges are brass, the key lock is nickel and the long piano hinge for the 2 piece lid is nickel plated.
All the nickel has rubbed off in places so it has been decide to refurbish the piano with all nickel fittings.
The pedal assembly was ordered from Steinway New York at a cost of nearly £400.The hinges and lock are with a local plater here in Leicester.
During February/March,fine adjustment of the action and downbearing was completed.
April saw work on the keys. The odd chipped key was replaced.
The legs presented a problem in so much as much of the scrollwork had damage to it so it was decide to re veneer the flat section of the legs and suitable wood onlay was purchased to match the detail on the main case, fitted and all the legs were stained and refinished.
At this point (May 1st) the rest of the case parts will be brought into the workshop for staining and refinishing.A new Steinway decal will be inserted on the fallboard prior to last laquar coats.
Next update will be the final one as the piano finally reaches the completion of the rebuild. In 2 months hopefully, depending on workshop time.
