Here is a 'mini' update as the point has been reached where a basic action set up was completed and the strings brought up to pitch and for the first time I can give you all an idea of what the piano sounds like for the first time in many years and argueably how it would have sounded in 1880.
There is still so much to do regarding regulation and adjustments but its getting there and I am very excited about the way it sounds.I am so glad I did not replace the soundboard as the notes are acheiving a glorious sustain and the bass section rattles the lighting in the workshop!
To get to this point, many hours/days were spent adjusting the backchecks, let off,and alignment of the hammers to the strings.
Still to do........adjust and refelt pedal assembly, fit and adjust sostenuto (middle pedal),adjust hammers to strings for correct pedal shift (soft pedal left),re adjust let off, backchecks, drop, wippens, check and adjust down bearings, space the keys, repair ivory on a couple of chipped keys, refinish rest of casework, lids, legs etc..New Steinway decal for the lid is ordered from USA.
Most of this work should be nearing completing by the next update (hopefully April time).Meanwhile here I am playing a small extract from a piece by the composer John Schofield.
